Nellie Sue, the irrepressible heroine of Rebecca Janni’s Every Cowgirl series is back, and it’s the first day of school. From the very beginning, things start to go wrong: She can’t wear her favorite pink cowboy hat, her best friend Anna is preoccupied with the new girl, Maya, and her desk is right in between the J-twins, Jacob and Joshua, who specialize in mayhem. Can anything save this disaster of a school year?
Nellie Sue makes an endearing character, and the problems she faces will be familiar to many school-age kids, cowgirl or not. Illustrations by Lynne Avril will keep kids turning pages, and while I’m not a fan of the cutesy font used for the text, it won’t detract from a reader’s enjoyment. A solid choice for aspiring cowboys and girls, kids who like their books pink and sparkly, and for anyone who is a little nervous about the first day of school.
