Every Cowgirl Goes to School by Rebecca Janni

ImageNellie Sue, the irrepressible heroine of Rebecca Janni’s Every Cowgirl series is back, and it’s the first day of school. From the very beginning, things start to go wrong: She can’t wear her favorite pink cowboy hat, her best friend Anna is preoccupied with the new girl, Maya, and her desk is right in between the J-twins, Jacob and Joshua, who specialize in mayhem. Can anything save this disaster of a school year?

Nellie Sue makes an endearing character, and the problems she faces will be familiar to many school-age kids, cowgirl or not. Illustrations by Lynne Avril will keep kids turning pages, and while I’m not a fan of the cutesy font used for the text, it won’t detract from a reader’s enjoyment. A solid choice for aspiring cowboys and girls, kids who like their books pink and sparkly, and for anyone who is a little nervous about the first day of school.
